Downtime and Aftercare
Different lasers require different amounts of downtime. Some laser resurfacing requires weeks of downtime, and others only a few days. For example, downtime from ablative laser treatment can take up to three weeks. The larger the treatment area and the deeper the laser, the longer the recovery time. During your consultation, we will determine which laser is right for your specific needs.
Generally, patients experience redness, swelling, and dryness after their laser skin resurfacing treatment. Your skin may scab over or peel. Using a good moisturizer may help during the healing process, but check with Dr. Barstad or one of our nurses before using any type of topical treatment on your healing skin.
Depending on the treated area and the type of laser, you may need to adjust your daily skin care routine and use new dressings to ensure your skin stays clean. We will go over your home care instructions with you to make sure you know what you’re supposed to do.
Keep in mind that your skin may be sun sensitive for up to one year following each laser skin resurfacing procedure. It’s important to always wear a good sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 when outside, even if it’s cloudy.
