Hair loss can have an incredibly negative impact on self-esteem and quality of life — and you have been dealing with it for years. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including age, alopecia, pregnancy, genetics, stress, and hormonal imbalances.

Causes of Hair Loss

The numerous culprits of hair loss can make finding the offender quite challenging. Below are the most common causes of hair loss in men and women. Together we will determine if our hair loss treatment is a good match for your specific condition.

Age

For many individuals, the production of new hairs stops with age. Not only do hairs become smaller; they also have less color, and the scalp often becomes more apparent. Men can begin showing signs of baldness by age 30, and many are nearly bald by age 60.

Hormonal Imbalances

For both women and men, a hormone that is responsible for hair loss is dihydrotestosterone, which the body produces as a byproduct of testosterone. Dihydrotestosterone makes hair follicles smaller, causing them to stop growing and fall out.

Pregnancy

Hair can go into a resting phase during pregnancy. Usually when this occurs, hair growth returns to normal within 3-4 months after the baby is born.

Genetics

Hereditary-pattern baldness is the most common reason for hair loss. It can come from either the mother or the father’s side.

Stress

When an individual loses hair due to anxiety or stress, typically it’s temporary.
Three types of hair loss that may be due to stress include:

  • Telogen effluvium. This condition occurs when many hair follicles are driven into a resting phase due to stress. When this condition happens, hairs may fall out suddenly when washing or brushing the hair.
  • Trichotillomania. This is a condition in which individuals pull out their hairs if they are stressed, anxious, tense, bored, angry, or frustrated.
  • Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a condition in which hair suddenly disappears from small patches due to autoimmunity. Typically, it manifests in a few bald spots on the scalp. These spots can be as small as a coin or as large as a tennis ball.
