How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Concentrated laser beams are applied into the hair follicles and are absorbed by the pigment within the follicles. When the pigments absorb the laser energy, it damages the follicle, making it unable to grow hair. The portion of the hair shaft below the skin will be pushed out over the next several days, leaving the remaining follicle inactive and empty.

What is Laser Hair Removal Like?

Our laser hair removal treatments in Frisco are quick, convenient and precise, with minimal discomfort. We will target the specific area that you want to be treated and let the laser go to work. Many patients describe the laser light as feeling like hot rubber bands being snapped on their skin — not exactly comfortable, but tolerable and worth it.

Pre-Treatment

  • To avoid skin pigmentation in the areas that you will be getting treated, stay out of the sun for 72 hours prior to your appointment.
  • Because the laser will need to be able to find your hair follicles, you should avoid waxing or tweezing any hair in the area that will be treated for at least six weeks.
  • Shave the day before your hair laser removal appointment but be sure to use a clean razor that has not been used before.

Post-Treatment

  • Stay out of the sun for at least one week to avoid skin pigmentation.
  • Don’t wax or tweeze any hairs. If you remove the hair from its shaft, it will make it difficult for the laser to pick it up during your next treatment.
  • Try your best to avoid sweating for at least 24 hours after your treatment.
  • If you find any blisters, leave them alone. Puncturing them will cause damage to your skin and may leave marks.
  • Avoid getting any other treatments to your skin for two weeks after your treatment. It’s important to allow your skin to heal properly.
  • When you want to shower or bathe, avoid extremely hot water for at least 48 hours.
  • Avoid applying makeup or perfume to the treated area for at least 24-48 hours.

How Long does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Hair follicles are active in cycles, much like the leaves of a tree during the changing of seasons. In order for the laser hair removal to effectively kill a follicle, the hair growth must be in the “spring” or growth phase of its life cycle.  Unfortunately, not all hairs on your body are synchronized in their seasons.  Follicles that are dormant, like a tree in the fall or winter will not be affected by the laser treatment.

Because of this biological fact, multiple treatments are needed to effectively remove all of the hair on the treatment area, each “crop” entering into a growth faze and thereby becoming vulnerable to the laser energy. Once all the “crops” have been effectively treated, the results can be extremely effective and long lasting. Occasional and sporadic touch ups may be necessary to maintain optimal results as new follicles have the possibility to appear.

Clients typically require 6-9 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart for maximum results. It’s also wise to note that some factors will impact the effectiveness of laser hair removal, such as skin color. Different skin colors may require a different amount of laser hair removal sessions. At BeauxMD, we will determine an individualized treatment plan for you, and we will carefully track your progress to get the best results for you.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Because laser hair removal is a customized treatment, costs will vary from client to client. Pricing will depend on the number of areas targeted, the total surface area addressed, and the total number of sessions required to effectively remove your hair. We will provide you with a personalized quote once you come into the office for skin analysis during your private consultation.

How old do I have to be to get laser hair removal?

Most doctors suggest that a patient waits until puberty to begin laser hair removal. Clients as young as 14 years old can be candidates, provided they are hormonally stable and do not have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Once a client is 17 years old, it is more likely that the hormones are properly regulated, and thus hair growth is slower and more consistent, making it easier and less costly to perform laser hair removal. If a teen does undergo the procedure, they must be able to withstand the discomfort involved, and be conscientious enough to maintain a schedule of follow-up visits. The patient also needs to be willing to comply with the doctor’s instructions, limiting sun exposure and strenuous exercise for a few days after their treatment. All this being said, laser hair removal can help teens to feel confident in how they look, which can be invaluable as they build self-esteem during these vulnerable years.
