How Chemical Peels Work

A chemical peel is a topical treatment that harnesses the natural, biological process that is already working within your body. Different types of chemical peels achieve different results, but they each work by applying chemicals to the skin, which remove damaged layers to reveal new, healthy skin.

Who's a Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are suitable for a broad range of candidates seeking skin rejuvenation and improvement in various skin concerns. Ideal candidates typically exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Sun-Damaged Skin: Individuals with sun-damaged skin, including sunspots, uneven pigmentation, and fine lines, can benefit from chemical peels.
  • Acne-Prone Skin: Candidates experiencing acne and acne scars may find chemical peels effective in reducing breakouts and improving the overall appearance of their skin.
  • Uneven Skin Tone: Those with uneven skin tone, pigmentation irregularities, or dark spots may see improvement through chemical peel treatments.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Individuals with fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and mouth, may experience a reduction in their appearance with chemical peels.
  • Desire for Skin Rejuvenation: Candidates seeking a non-invasive method to rejuvenate and refresh their skin, revealing a smoother and more youthful complexion, are often suitable candidates.
  • Good Overall Health: Candidates should be in good general health with no contraindications to the procedure.
  • Realistic Expectations: Those with realistic expectations about the outcomes of chemical peels and a willingness to follow post-treatment care guidelines are ideal candidates.
  • Not Pregnant or Breastfeeding: Chemical peels are generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Commitment to Sun Protection: Candidates should be committed to sun protection practices post-treatment to maintain and maximize results. Consulting with a qualified skincare professional can help determine individual candidacy and customize the appropriate peel for specific skin concerns.

What are Chemical Peel Treatments Like?

When you arrive for your chemical peel treatment, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned in order to remove any barriers between the chemicals and your skin, such as makeup or moisturizer. This also helps to dry your skin out as much as possible so that the chemicals penetrate the skin more effectively.

After a small amount of gel is applied to certain areas of the face, the chemicals will be administered. The chemicals include a mild acid (typically these are fruit acids and tartaric acid).

We always make sure to keep your comfort in mind and make sure we’re not going too deep. The chemicals will stay on as long as required for the type of chemical peel that you’re having done.

What Happens to the Skin During a Chemical Peel?

During the process, the chemicals trigger a reaction in the skin and melt away the outer layers of dead skin. This will even out the skin tone and begin the process of creating new collagen.

When the peel begins to dry, you may feel a burning or tingling sensation, indicating that the chemical peel is working. Its acidic chemicals are doing their job, causing a very small injury to the skin that allows it to make the new collagen, to regenerate itself, and create brand-new, untouched skin. Downtime and What to Expect

Patients can expect their skin to begin peeling 3-5 days after their Frisco chemical peel treatment, not immediately afterwards. Once the peeling begins, sunscreen should be applied around every three hours in order to control the peeling and prevent hyperpigmentation. Patients can also use a gentle cleanser and a hydrating gel with hyaluronic acid to help soothe the skin.

Hot water (baths, hot tubs, saunas, hot showers) are to be avoided for two weeks after treatment. If your skin heats up too much, it can result in inflammation, which can create post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

We advise staying out of the sun for at least one week, and when you do go into the sun, be sure to wear a good SPF. You’ll need to wear sunscreen for two months following your treatment, as your skin will be thinner and therefore much more vulnerable to damage from UV rays.

Chemical Peel FAQs:

What skin issues can chemical peels address?

Chemical peels are effective in treating a variety of skin concerns, including acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation.

Are there different types of chemical peels?

Yes, chemical peels vary in intensity. Superficial peels address the outermost layer of the skin, while medium and deep peels penetrate deeper layers for more significant results.

How long does a chemical peel procedure take?

The duration depends on the type and depth of the peel. Superficial peels may take around 30 minutes, while deeper peels can take an hour or more.

Is a chemical peel painful?

Sensations during a chemical peel can range from mild tingling to a sensation resembling sunburn. Deeper peels may cause more discomfort, but pain is typically manageable and can be addressed with topical anesthetics.

What is the downtime after a chemical peel?

Downtime varies based on the peel's depth. Superficial peels may have minimal downtime, while deeper peels may require a week or more for skin to fully heal and peel.

How many sessions are needed for noticeable results?

Multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results. Superficial peels may require a series, while deeper peels may show significant improvement after just one treatment.

Are chemical peels suitable for all skin types?

Chemical peels can be tailored to different skin types and concerns. However, individuals with certain skin conditions or recent sun exposure may not be ideal candidates.

Can chemical peels be done at home?

While mild peels are available for home use, it's advisable to have chemical peels performed by trained professionals for safety and optimal results.
