Types of Scars

When it comes to scars, it’s important to understand what kind you have in order to know how to treat them. Different types of scars include:

  • Acne scars. Many individuals who experience acne also experience acne scarring. This can happen even if you never picked at your breakouts. Some acne scars can be light, and others can be deeply pitted.
  • Contracture scars. Contracture scarring often happens as the result of a burn. These types of scars cause the skin to constrict.
  • Keloid scars. This is a raised scar that results from an injury, such as being severely cut or deeply scraped. Keloid scars can eventually become bigger than the original injury.
  • Atrophic scars. Typically forming after trauma such as severe acne, mole removal, or chickenpox, atrophic scars are indented and heal below the dermis.
  • Hypertrophic scars. Hypertrophic scars are raised, red scars much like keloids, only they don’t go beyond the boundary of the injury.

Once we know what type of scarring you have, we will go over what your best options for treatment will be.

Best Treatments for Scars

Our scar treatments at BeauxMD are each different, with unique benefits and abilities. Sometimes one of these procedures alone will improve scarring, and sometimes a combination of treatments is best.

  • Intense Pulsed Light. While intense pulsed light treatments don’t reduce or smooth the actual scars themselves, the procedure can improve their appearance by evening out skin tone and lightening the scars if they are dark or red.
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing. Laser skin resurfacing treatments produce natural collagen, which helps to fill in acne scars.
  • Chemical Peels. Chemical peels remove layers of damaged skin, along with acne scars. The most commonly used chemical peels for improving acne scars are salicylic acid, glycolic acid, Jessner's solution, resorcinol, and trichloroacetic acid.
  • Microneedling. Microneedling is a collagen-producing treatment. The fresh new collagen that is created smooths out the skin and fills in scarred areas.
  • Dermal Fillers. Depending on what type of scarring you have, dermal fillers can get significant results. Juvéderm is great for improving acne scarring, but Restylane is known for being the gold standard filler for scarring and can last up to nine months. Dermal fillers are often used in combination with another treatment for scar improvement.
