What is an Intense Pulsed Light Photofacial?

Intense pulsed light photofacials (also called a “fotofacial,” “facial rejuvenation,” or “photo rejuvenation”) use broadband light to improve problem areas of the skin, leaving it more evenly toned and with a healthy glow. Our IPL photofacials also stimulate the production of collagen, which plumps up the skin, which results in a refreshed, radiant look.

Although they are called photofacials, Plano, TX IPL photofacials can be done on other areas, such as the neck, chest, hands, and feet.

IPL Photofacials Treat:

  • Sun damage
  • Rosacea and redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Brown spots
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Acne
  • Spider veins
  • Discolored scarring
  • Blotches
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines
  • Other skin lesions

Many people choose intense pulsed light therapy because it can treat several problem areas at the same time.

How do IPL Photofacials Work?

Our IPL photofacials use quick pulses of intense light to penetrate the skin deeply, targeting different color pigments that show up on the surface of the skin. As the skin pigments heat up from the light, they are destroyed and removed through the body's natural healing power.

What Are IPL Photofacial Treatments Like?

During your IPL photofacial session, your face will be washed and you’ll be given protective eyewear to keep your eyes safe from the bright flashes of light. You will also be given a gel or cream to cool your skin.

A handheld instrument is passed across the damaged area of the skin, administering pulses of broad spectrum light into the deep layers of the skin, healing it.

Many people say that the feeling of an IPL photofacial is comparable to plucking nose hairs, getting a small pinch, or having a rubber band snapped on the skin. The sensation is quite tolerable, and very much worth the result.

The average amount of time for each IPL photofacial treatment is about 15-30 minutes. Afterward, you may be given ice packs or a cream to help with any discomfort.

What is Recovery like after IPL?

Each individual will have a different skin type and a different skin issue. The recovery period will depend on these factors, as well as how intense the treatment was.

Some patients will have temporary discoloration for about four days after their IPL photofacial treatment. This discoloration will flake off slowly. Others may experience splotchy or red skin, and some may see dark speckles on their skin during recovery. Patients may also feel like they have a sunburn, but any discomfort is very minimal.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The more damaged a person’s skin is, the more treatments they may need. The answer to how many sessions is needed depends on how large the area is that’s being treated, the intensity of the treatment, and the patient’s specific goals. About 3-5 treatments every three weeks is average, and then maintenance twice a year.

Results

The first beneficial effects of an IPL photofacial happen gradually, over about two weeks following treatment — and the final results can typically be seen about 3-5 months afterward.
